A Party for John Sasso
At the close of the Winter Meeting, on January 29, 2000,
NCDA will host a retirement celebration for John Sasso.
This event will recognize the outstanding contribution of
30 years of service to the National Community
Development Association, and to the field of community
development.
NCDA's staff wants to make this event very special and
inclusive. We want to include John's friends, and
colleagues, video clips and photos of his experiences with
you. For this we need your help. We need you to tell us
about your relationships with John. We want to make this
celebration a type of "this is your life John Sasso" as seen
through the eyes of those who have come to know and love
him.
We are putting together a full-color memorabilia book, to
include tributes, well wishes, and photos from member
communities, friends, colleagues, and individuals. We
would like to market the memorabilia book as a "Best
Practices" document for the membership. When members
highlight their experiences with John, they should point
out how he and NCDA have been helpful in working out the
funding, design and overall implementation of a project or
a program. Providing this type of "Best Practice" approach
by way of the memorabilia book passes along valuable
project information to the membership, and it also makes
sponsorship in the book a CDBG eligible expense.
Everyone attending the event will receive a copy. It is
our intent to use the memorabilia book to raise funds to
offset the costs of the celebration and to help us create
and endow the John A. Sasso Foundation for Community
Development.
The John A. Sasso Foundation for Community Development
will be a gift from the membership to the founder of the
Association. The Foundation's mission statement is:
The John A. Sasso Foundation for Community Development is established for
the purpose of keeping the spirit of neighborhood-based community
development alive by providing grants to worthy not-for-profit community-based
ventures, public service internships, and community development education and
research fellowhips.
